Dental braces - orthodontists use them to correct misshapen and misaligned teeth or jaws. Their goal is to obtain an even bite and a pleasant smile. Modern materials and technology make wearing dental braces much more comfortable and preferred than in the past, when orthodontic treatment was difficult to access. Now this service is very common and popular, as long as the patient is motivated enough.

Dental braces offer corrective treatment in the following cases:

  • lack of space between teeth, deformed and crooked teeth
  • wider space between teeth
  • upper front teeth that overlap the lower teeth too much
  • upper front teeth that fall behind the lower ones
  • other jaw malposition problems that cause an uneven bite

Proper alignment of the teeth and jaws can improve not only the appearance of patients, but also the health of the mouth and the way one bites, chews and speaks.

If your dentist notices problems with your teeth or jaws and thinks you need treatment, he or she will refer you to a specialist - an orthodontist. An orthodontist is a dentist who specializes in diagnosing, preventing and treating dental and jaw irregularities.

Some teeth alignment problems are noticeable as early as childhood. These cases should be referred for treatment even before the onset of puberty. More obvious dental problems are seen once the growth of permanent teeth begins. It is very important for children aged around 7-8 years to visit their orthodontists more frequently to prevent future disorders. Most adolescents wear braces between the ages of 8 and 14 while their facial bones are still growing and their teeth are more easily impacted. Wearing dental braces is a fairly safe procedure.

Preparation for braces usually includes:

  • Your orthodontist performs a complete examination of your teeth, jaws and mouth.
  • A panoramic x-ray is needed that shows all the upper and lower teeth, the bite and including teeth that are still developing in the jaws. Special x-rays of the head can help determine the size, position and relationship of the jaws to the teeth.
  • Plaster model - a soft material that stays on your teeth for a few minutes. From this impression, a plaster model is created and the orthodontist evaluates your bite.
  • Potential tooth extraction - if there is limited space in your jaw for all of your existing teeth, the orthodontist may recommend removing one or more permanent teeth to make room for the remaining teeth to fit comfortably. This allows them to fit better and also provides the necessary surface area for optimal cleaning.
  • Other procedures - in some rare, severe cases where tooth movement alone will not correct the bite, jaw reposition surgery is necessary.
  • In combination with the orthodontic treatment, a comprehensive plan for the patient's further care is prescribed. After the orthodontist evaluates your teeth and jaw, he or she will customize treatment. This most often involves the use of fixed braces that are temporarily bonded to your teeth. Treatment is done in three phases: initial braces placement, periodic adjustments, and the use of a retainer after the braces are removed.

Types of braces:

The modern market has various manufacturing companies. Brequettes are becoming more and more high-quality, innovative, individual and modern solutions, not only in terms of their appearance, but also in terms of their use and adjustment.

  • Metal braces - look smaller and less noticeable than the huge splints of a few years ago. The advancement of orthodontics and the application of technology in the fabrication of braces allows the use of various techniques and methods to optimize the alignment of teeth and reduce pain during the process. Metal braces are made of high quality stainless steel and are individually attached to each tooth. They are then connected together using a metal arch that applies pressure to the teeth and locates them in the correct position. Metal braces involve placement on the outside of the tooth rows as well as on the inside. In the second way, the braces become practically invisible. Placing them on the inside may cause some peculiarities, such as temporary discomfort at first. They are not suitable for very severe cases of deformity and require thorough and more careful cleaning than those placed on the outside of the teeth.
  • Ceramic braces - characteristic for them is that they are like the metal ones in shape and size. The difference is that when placed on the teeth, they take on their colour and appear invisible. This type of braces can be almost completely inconspicuous if a bonding arch in the shade of the teeth is also chosen. Patients who prefer the ceramic option should know that with improper maintenance, the color of the braces can change and become more noticeable. This necessitates more frequent visits to the dental office.
  • Ligating braces are small, elegant and very efficient. They provide complete control over tooth movement and long-term stability. The arch is fixed in the braces with elastic ligatures, which are available in a variety of colours. They can be changed at any time during treatment. Patients choose them depending on the seasons, fashion trends in colors, clothing or simply their mood. The main advantage of ligature braces is their affordable price and versatility. They have only one disadvantage - ligatures quickly become unusable, stretch and change color. So for effective treatment, the patient should arrange a visit to their orthodontist more often. For even greater comfort, self-ligating braces are now available. Instead of ligatures, they use a kind of buckles. This type of fixings are more resistant, are not subject to deformation and their adjustment can be done much less frequently than with conventional ones. In addition, friction is quite minimal with them.

Mobile transparent aligners - Aligners

For minor adjustments, an option is the placement of custom, removable appliances called clear aligners, "invisible braces" or aligners. They are recommended for patients who only need minor dental improvements. Their technology involves a set of invisible braces that are used for a set period of time (usually 7 to 14 days) and have a precise sequence of use. Each set of aligners is made strictly individually, according to the patient's tooth rows. Their advantage over standard braces is that they can be removed during meals and when cleaning teeth. They are also practically invisible to the eye. They are suitable both for correcting tooth rows and for prophylaxis after treatment at an orthodontist.

Periodic adjustments

Once fixed braces are placed on your teeth, your orthodontist adjusts them periodically by tightening or bending the binders. This puts slight pressure on your teeth and gradually moves them into new positions. The jaw reacts to the pressure by dissolving the bone in the path of the moving tooth.

Sometimes the orthodontist can use the tension between the upper and lower jaw to help with proper alignment. This is often done with elastic bands stretched between opposing teeth.

Fixers

After removing the dental braces, the newly erected teeth must be stabilized for a certain period of time (retention period) to prevent them from returning to their original position. This is achieved by using a specially made appliance, usually made of plastic or plastic and metal elements, to help the teeth stay in place (retainer). When it comes to the final phase, it is important to have patience and wear the retainer as directed or risk losing any benefits gained from wearing it.

On average, most people wear full braces for one to three years. Braces are usually very effective for realigning crooked teeth and helping to correct misaligned jaws to create a pleasing smile and healthy mouth. The main thing to remember is that orthodontic treatment is temporary and when the uncomfortable period passes, you will be proud of perfect teeth and a delightful smile. For more information, we at Medical Karaj are at your service.
