And do you remember when you were a child that in kindergarten and school they regularly checked your spine and posture? Yes, this is extremely important for the health of children. Spinal disorders in early childhood are of two types: congenital and acquired. Common acquired spinal disorders in adolescents are scoliosis or curvatures of the spine, with no clear cause for their occurrence. These diseases account for about 80% of all spinal curvatures in childhood. Girls are more likely to suffer from spinal curvatures, which is why it is also very important to monitor your child's back.
It is important to know that a large percentage of spinal disorders can be successfully treated if diagnosed in time.
Types of spinal curvatures:
- Lateral curvature of the spine in children is called scoliosis.
- An excessively curved back spine is a pathological condition called kyphosis.
- When the spine is curved too far forward there is a pathological condition called lordosis.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine to the sides. It can be congenital or acquired. Scoliosis can be found at almost any age.
Congenital scoliosis can be caused by other congenital diseases such as cerebral palsy, Marfan syndrome, presence or absence of extra edges on the ribs, disorders in the structure of the vertebrae, etc.
The causes of acquired scoliosis can be: prolonged unilateral pressure on the spine caused by incorrect position of the school desk, systematic loads by carrying heavy schoolbags, as well as injuries from accidents.
Children with this disorder do not have any complaints, pain or any other symptoms, such as an inappropriate body posture. Therefore, only careful observation can lead to its timely diagnosis.
Kifoza
The disease kyphosis is diagnosed by the degree of the angle of curvature of the spine. Various birth defects, birth trauma, tumors of the spine can lead to this disease. One of its first symptoms in a child is a habit of drooping.
Lordosis
Lordosis is an extremely rare disease. It is observed in the case of congenital deformation of the hip joint, congenital malformations of the bone and muscle structure, birth trauma.
The treatment of spinal curvatures has three options:
- Physical exercises recommended and supervised by a doctor, massage and therapy - applied to acquired spinal curvatures in the initial stages.
- Medication - through medications prescribed by a doctor - is usually only recommended for advanced phases of spinal curvatures.
- Through surgical intervention - it is a solution primarily for congenital pathological distortions.
Prevention
- In order to avoid undesirable consequences of curvature of the spine, the child should be provided with a proper diet with all the necessary substances supporting his health.
- Morning gymnastics and outdoor physical games should be a must in the child's daily routine.
- Monitor and urge your child to strive for correct posture when at the school desk or in front of the computer at home.
- Any sport is beneficial in spinal disorders because it strengthens the muscles.
- The back of every child in adolescence should be examined at least once a year by the attending physician.
