Diabetic retinopathy and vitrectomy
High blood sugar levels in diabetics damage blood vessels throughout the body, including eye capillaries, and gradually lead to vision loss. The damage to the retina caused by diabetes is called diabetic retinopathy. A major contributing factor is prolonged diabetic disease with high blood sugar levels. In the initial stages of the disease, patients usually have no complaints and learn about the problem on casual examination. An important diagnostic method to identify patients who need treatment is Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA).
Diagnosis and treatment of retinal problems have improved significantly in recent years with the advent of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) equipment, such as that available at the Batigoz Clinic. In the early stages of the disease, laser treatment can halt the progress of vascular damage and prevent permanent vision loss. In some cases, intraocular injections are necessary. In the advanced stage of the disease, surgery is applied in which the microbleeds in the eye are cleaned and the intraocular membrane is removed with a pars plana vitrectomy.
Retinopathy in premature infants
Babies born prematurely are placed in a cuvette and oxygenated. However, in some of them, this life-saving intervention can lead to retinal and vision problems. This can be dangerous if the problem is not detected and treated in time. Treatment can be done with argon laser or with cooling (cryotherapy).
In childhood, other eye problems may also be seen, requiring regular examinations for early detection. Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are seen in both adults and children. Strabismus (nearsightedness) and amblyopia (lazy eye) also require timely intervention in early childhood to achieve good outcomes.
