E.M. from Plovdiv was cured of type 2 diabetes with the help of an innovative surgery, which is applied by several surgeons around the world. The 45-year-old woman has been diabetic for 4 years, with blood sugar reaching 17 mmol/l, despite the prescribed medication and diet. With the assistance of Medical Karaj Health Information Center, she contacted Dr. Turul Demirel, a surgeon in Turkey who treats diabetes with surgery. She underwent surgery with him last October and her blood sugar is currently in the 4.8 - 5.5 range, and without any medication. She has also lost 40 kg of her weight.
"The decision to undergo the surgery was one of the best of my life," says E.M. The surgery itself is laparoscopic, only 5 small holes remain after it and the recovery period is short, she says. Days after the operation, the 45-year-old woman returned to work, and both she and her entire family are happy with the results. She no longer has to take medication and insulin, and the change in her appearance is more than positive.
Hundreds of patients, including several from Bulgaria, have already benefited from the new method, according to Medical Carrage. The surgery is suitable for patients aged between 18 and 70 with type 2 diabetes who were diagnosed with the disease more than two years ago and who are unable to control their blood sugar levels well with standard treatment.
85% of the patients who underwent the surgery are discharged from the hospital completely insulin independent, says Dr. Turul Demirel. In 10% of them, medication treatment is reduced and stopped within a few months. In 5% of those operated on, insulin use is reduced and better blood sugar control is achieved. This is achieved with what is called ileal interposition, a type of bowel "displacement" that removes the damage to the beta cells that underlie diabetes mellitus in a much more powerful way than all medications and insulin. So far, the innovative method has only been applied in a few countries around the world - Brazil, Japan, India, America, Italy and Turkey.
On 26 and 27 May, Dr. Demirel will consult for free in Varna patients who are interested in the new treatment.
Obese patients who are interested in surgical resolution of their problem can also benefit from free consultations. So-called bariatric surgery is recommended for patients with a body mass index over 35 who cannot lose weight with diet and exercise. Various methods are applied that are based on reducing the stomach volume or suppressing the absorption of nutrients. The decision as to whether surgery is appropriate for a particular patient and what method to use must necessarily be made by a highly qualified professional.
