Lung diseases are one of the most common health problems. Signs that may manifest include: abnormal breathing rate, cough, chest pain, bluish discoloration of skin and mucous membranes (cyanosis), fever, wheezing, asymmetric chest expansion, pleural friction, crepitations, and others. Many people assume that coughing or shortness of breath is part of normal aging, but it is not.
Signs that suggest the likelihood of developing lung disease are:
- Chronic cough - this is a cough that lasts more than a month. It is an important early symptom that indicates a health problem affecting the respiratory system.
- Shortness of breath - it is not normal to experience shortness of breath without physical exertion or after exercise. Of course, it's normal to have more labored and rapid breathing if you were rushing to the bus stop, climbing stairs, or exercising. But it's not normal to experience shortness of breath that doesn't go away after a particular physical exertion.
- Snore - the secretion from the respiratory tract is produced as a defensive reaction to infections or irritants entering the respiratory system. If the presence of phlegm persists for more than a month, it may indicate the development of lung disease.
- Wheezing - harsh, whistling and prolonged sounds that settle during breathing, which are the result of blockage of the airways and lungs.
- Coughing up blood - if you are coughing up blood, it could be coming from your lungs or upper respiratory tract. Its presence is always a signal of a health problem - chronic bronchitis, emphysema, tuberculosis, cancer.
- Chronic chest pain - unexplained chest pain that persists for more than a month and worsens with breathing and coughing is also a serious sign and medical attention should be sought.
What is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two most common conditions that contribute to COPD. Chronic bronchitis is inflammation of the lining of the bronchi. It is characterized by a daily cough and sputum discharge. Emphysema is a condition in which the alveoli are destroyed as a result of damaging exposure to cigarette smoke and other irritating gases and particulate matter. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable and treatable disease. The disease is usually progressive. Patients over the age of 40 are most at risk, most often smokers or people exposed to household or occupational risk factors. COPD is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, the most aggressive of which is smoking.
