Who is Prof. Dr. Afsun Shaheen?
Prof. Dr. Afsun Shaheen graduated from Ankara University Medical School with one of the highest grades in 2000. He completed his ophthalmology specialization at Hacettepe University, Ankara in 2000-2004. Between 2009 and 2011, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship program at Harvard Medical School Schepens Eye Research Institute focusing on corneal diseases, external eye diseases and eye surgery. Dr. Shaheen was awarded the rank of Associate Professor in 2012 and was promoted to Professor in 2017. Since 2017, he has been the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Koch University Hospital.
Prof. Dr. Afsun Shaheen has won many local and international awards for his research:

Prof. Dr. Shaheen has published over 100 articles, book chapters and abstracts, and his research has been funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). He organized his research group in the field of corneal and ocular surface disorders with contributions from TÜBİTAK, TÜBA and ARVO.
His clinical and research interests include:
- Diseases of the ocular surface and cornea
- Complex cataract surgeries
- Refractive surgery (to remove glasses)
- Keratoconus
- Surgery and corneal transplantation
- Dry eye and ocular surface disorders
