Проф. д-р Сами Сьокюджю

Prof. Dr. Sami Sökyücü, one of the most prestigious orthopedic and traumatology specialists in Turkey, will consult patients in Sofia for free on October 12. He will be visiting the country at the invitation of the Health Information Center "Medical Karadži" as part of their initiative to provide Bulgarian patients with access to the latest advances in medicine by partnering with some of the best medical institutions and specialists from around the world.

Prof. Dr. Sami Sokujju is one of the few doctors with a certificate from the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT). Apart from Turkey, prof. Sökyücü is also a lecturer and examiner at the University of Lisbon. He has authored and co-authored more than 50 scientific publications in medical journals. Since this year, he has been working in the orthopedic department of VM Medical Park Florya Hospital of the Medical Park chain in Istanbul. He works with patients with all musculoskeletal disorders, but mostly with those with orthopedic injuries, bone defects and deformities, with the need for limb lengthening.

Bone cysts and tumors

Bone tumors make up about 5% of all tumors found in humans. They can be benign and malignant. Benign ones do not spread to other organs of the body and usually the body is able to prevent their development. But in some cases their surgical removal is necessary.

However, malignant tumours tend to spread to adjacent tissues and form metastases. When they originate in the bone they are called primary and when they originate in another organ and have spread to the bone by blood they are called metastatic. They can arise from bone cells but also from cartilage, connective tissue and bone marrow. The most common type of bone cancer is osteosarcoma. It usually occurs in children and young people aged 10-25 years, more commonly in males.

Along with this, there are a number of other lesions that resemble bone tumors but are actually harmless. These are bone cysts and other tumour-like growths that do not directly threaten life and health, but can damage bone or cause fractures, deformities and growth problems. Each of these lesions requires a different approach and treatment.

Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of bone formation is a complex and responsible process that requires experienced specialists and a multidisciplinary team.

Extension of limbs

The difference in limb length can be a congenital malformation, but it can also result from trauma, infection, etc. When this difference is significant, it can be corrected using various medical devices and techniques that aim to form new bone tissue. The process is called osteogenesis, and the methods are becoming more sophisticated. Modern techniques include lengthening the femur and tibia and using intraosseous nails instead of external fixators, which increases comfort for the patient.

Hip and knee arthroplasties

Arthroplasty is surgery to relieve pain and restore joint mobility by reconstructing or replacing the affected joint. It is used for people with degenerative joint disease and certain other conditions that cause severe pain and limited mobility. Hip arthroplasty, for example, is applied as a last option after all non-surgical methods have been exhausted. Many surgical methods have been developed for hip replacement to improve patient comfort, and a variety of metal, ceramic or polyethylene materials can be used. Again, the appropriate method is decided by the doctor on a case-by-case basis, and the experience of the specialist is key.
