Born in 1970 in Istanbul.
In 1988 prof. Mert Erkan completed his high school education at Dost College.
He graduated from Istanbul University in 1995.
He completed his specialization in the Department of Surgery at Istanbul University in 2001.
Between 2003 and 2007, he started postdoctoral research at the European Pancreatic Centre for Molecular Biology and obtained his second PhD with highest honours (summa cum laude) on "The influence of tumour-modulated microenvironment on behaviour in pancreatic cancer" from the University of Heidelberg in Munich.
He completed his second specialty in Digestive Surgery in 2010 and became a consultant surgeon.
He obtained the degree of Associate Professor in Surgery in 2011.
He became head of hepatopancreatic surgery at the Technical University of Munich in 2013.
Since 2014 he has been working at the Department of Surgery of Koc Medical School.
