We're all concerned about the beauty of our smile, but dental health is also essential for good oral health. There is a dental manipulation that encompasses both the care of a healthy and beautiful smile - BONDING.
WHAT IS BONDING AND WHEN IS IT APPLIED?
Bonding means "connecting." In this dental practice, the effect of building a bond between the teeth is sought to make the tooth rows properly aligned and consistent with each other.
Bonding is used to remove small defects related to tooth shape, size or to smooth out imperfections on the surface. A common problem is the weakness of tooth enamel due to disease factors, medication intake, dental fluorosis or staining after root canal treatment. Bonding can be used to fill the space between teeth or to extend the height of a tooth that has been erupted due to malocclusion or bruxism.
The so-called "Hollywood smile" can also be achieved, but of course with less quality than with the placement of veneers.
If you want to whiten your teeth, it's a good idea to do it in advance. This is necessary because during the bonding procedure, the specialist chooses a photopolymer color that matches the natural tooth. Once selected and placed, this photopolymer does not change color, even after a whitening procedure.
HOW IS IT DONE?
Anesthesia is not necessary unless the tooth is broken near a nerve that may be irritated during the procedure.
When starting the work, the specialist uses a chart to select the correct color, followed by a light filing of the tooth and application of a bonding agent on which the composite photopolymer is placed. The photopolymer allows for shape correction so that the specialist can shape the tooth correctly.
The next step is irradiation with UV light, which cures the photopolymer. In case the patient has a remark about the shape or the comfort feeling of the tooth, the doctor can shape and polish the composition further. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth depending on the condition of the tooth.
Photopolymers have a chameleon effect, making them adaptable to tooth color and light changes.
Compared to the placement of crowns and veneers, bonding has the advantage of minimal grinding of the tooth, as well as the possibility of correction in case of breakage, staining or abrasion of the photopolymer material.
The disadvantage is the shorter durability /from 3 to 10 years depending on the load on the teeth/.
Bonding is recommended in areas with less loading force- for example, in the front of the jaw.
As we said, extending the durability of the material requires special care:
- Maintaining good oral hygiene - brushing teeth at least 2 times a day
- flossing at least once a day - extremely important due to the minimal spacing between teeth
- mouth rinsing with antiseptic water daily at least once a day
- regular check-ups and cleaning
- avoiding caffeinated and dark drinks, smoking
When the photopolymer is stained, a re-polishing is performed to bring back the shine of the teeth.
Still, bonding is a good conservative way to maintain both the strength and beauty of your smile. For more information, we at Medical Caring are at your service.
