Astigmatism is referred to as the condition in which the shape of the cornea of the eye is altered into an oblong rather than the normal spherical shape. This distorted shape focuses the rays reflected from objects on not one, but two points in the pupil and the image a person sees becomes blurry.
Astigmatism is a common defect that predisposes to myopia or hyperopia, or is often present together with them.
Astigmatism is most often congenital, but it can also occur after eye surgery, as a result of Keratoconus, or from damage to the eye from a wound or infection. There are two main types: regular and irregular. The former is more common. In the latter, the curvature of the cornea is greater in one direction. In the irregular, it may be curved in several directions, or with a greater downward curvature.
Symptoms
Symptoms in which we should consider the presence of astigmatism are: blurred vision near and far, difficulty seeing details and shapes of objects, blurred peripheral vision. Depending on the degree of astigmatism, when it is small, it may not cause impaired vision and may not need correction.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of Astigmatism is made with a routine eye examination, starting with a visual acuity test in which letters of decreasing size are read. This then moves on to a keratometer test - this detects the curvature of the cornea and how it focuses light. If necessary, a colour map of the eye is also made with a corneal topographer.
When vision is severely affected by astigmatism and causes strain, headaches and great eye fatigue, it is necessary to correct it.
Treatment
Treatment of astigmatism involves two methods:
- Wearing corrective lenses - using glasses or contact lenses. With them, light rays are focused in the right place, correcting the curvature of the cornea.
Modern medicine offers a permanent solution for people suffering from astigmatism:
- Laser surgery - a laser is used to change the shape of the cornea. This is an extremely effective and quick procedure within 20-30 minutes. With laser surgery, a quick recovery and return to daily activities is in sight, without the inconvenience of having to wear glasses or contacts.
