Assoc. Prof. Dr. Christiane Tallinger from WPK on sun allergy

  1. What is sun allergy and what forms does it take?

This is a type of allergic skin reaction that occurs due to exposure to sunlight. It is often accompanied by a rash with red spots on the skin and itching. Sun allergy can also be triggered by the use of a certain type of medication or skin contact with the lime or wild parsnip plant. In some cases, symptoms of this condition may also occur due to its hereditary nature. One of the most common forms of this type of allergy is sun poisoning (polymorphic light eruption). In some people who are more severely affected by sun allergy, treatment with tablets or even steroid creams is necessary. In cases where a person suffers from severe sun allergy, he or she should use sun prevention, for this purpose wearing sun protective clothing is required. In milder cases of this condition, treatment is not necessary.

  1. When is it advisable to avoid exposure to sunlight?

When exposed to the sun, it is possible for a person to develop photosensitivity due to ultraviolet rays. This is a condition in which the skin becomes particularly sensitive to sunlight. When using medications without a doctor's prescription or coming into contact with certain plants, a person can develop an allergic reaction to sunlight. In the case of people with a severe form of this type of allergy, the use of special clothing with UV protection is required as a preventive measure.

  1. Is sun exposure prohibited after undergoing a surgery?

Scars on the skin are more sensitive after surgical intervention. This means there is a greater risk of skin damage from UVA and UVB rays. Therefore, it is necessary to apply more special care to protect the skin scars from the sun. When in contact with the sun, blisters may form on the skin and a slower scar recovery process may ensue due to the likelihood of enlargement due to sunlight. It can also lead to dark patches on the skin (hyperpigmentation) or to paler or white patches on the skin in a state of hypopigmentation.

  1. What are the necessary measures to protect against sunlight?

One of the important methods to protect yourself from the sun's ultraviolet rays is to use sunscreen products. It is also advisable to reduce sun exposure between 10 am and 2 pm when it is at its strongest. These measures are necessary as sunlight can lead to premature aging and skin damage. Also, UVA and UVB rays can contribute to skin spots, psoriasis and eczema. When exposed to sunlight, it can also cause skin cancer.
