Procedures performed by the doctor:
Video EEG monitoring
Video EEG monitoring is a way to simultaneously record a child's behavior and the brain's electrical activity (EEG). It is done with special equipment that records EEG, video and sound on a computer for later analysis. Unlike routine EEG recordings, which are usually done between episodes, Video-EEG monitoring aims to record the child's EEG and behaviour during episodes.
The main reasons children undergo this research are:
- distinguish epileptic seizures from episodes that may mimic epileptic seizures
- characterize the type or types of seizures the child has
- to locate the part of the brain where the child's seizures occur
The duration of the study varies from a few hours in one day to continuous monitoring for many hours in a week, depending on how often the child has seizures. If the child has different types of seizures, examples of each are recorded if possible.
Spinal fusion
Spinal fusion, also called spondylodesis or spondylosyndesis, is an operation used to permanently connect two or more vertebrae in the spine and prevent movement between them. Spinal fusion surgery is performed in conjunction with other surgical procedures, such as foraminotomy or laminectomy, and after a discectomy of the neck. It is required if the patient has a vertebral injury or fracture. Spinal fusion is also performed for abnormal curvatures that result from scoliosis or kyphosis.
