Dr. Seha Akduman, a pulmonary specialist from Medicana Hospital in Turkey, will consult patients in Sofia for free on May 11 and 12. Dr. Akduman is part of the team of the world-renowned Prof. Dr. Yalçan Karakoja, who applies an innovative treatment method for lung cancer and COPD. She is coming to our country at the invitation of the Health Information Centre "Medical Karadja", as part of their initiative to provide Bulgarian patients with access to the most advanced methods in medicine, partnering with some of the best medical institutions and specialists from around the world.
Lung cancer is increasingly common and is now the second most common cancer worldwide. Unfortunately, it is among the leading causes of cancer deaths in both men and women. Among the main reasons for this is the lack of specific symptoms at the initial stage of the disease, and early diagnosis is a major prerequisite for successful treatment.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been called the "smoker's disease" because cigarette addiction is a major contributing factor. It occurs most often in smokers after about 20 years of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. The first symptoms usually appear around the age of 40 - cough, phlegm, shortness of breath. They are felt most in the morning and in winter, or with physical exertion, but over time they become constant until shortness of breath becomes a constant companion even in a state of rest. Patients with COPD tend to ignore the symptoms until they make daily life significantly more difficult, and at this stage treatment is also difficult.
In 2006, Prof. Dr. Yalchan Karakoja and his team developed a method that improves lung function in patients with lung cancer, and later the method began to be successfully applied to COPD patients for whom conventional treatment does not help.
