Epilepsy

Epilepsy is also known as seizure disorder, a neurological condition that affects the nervous system. It is usually diagnosed after a person has had at least two seizures that were not caused by some known medical condition such as alcohol withdrawal or extremely low blood sugar. Seizures in epilepsy may be related to brain damage or familial burden, but most of the time the cause is unknown. It results from the generation of electrical signals that come from inside the brain, causing recurrent seizures. The patient's mind, body and intelligence are impaired. The disease of some patients does not respond very well to regular medical treatment. The regular treatments are medicines, surgeries and biotherapies.

Current evidence seems to suggest that excitotoxic mechanisms are involved in a number of neurological disorders, including status epilepticus (SE), a condition that occurs in some patients with epilepsy. SE states lead to neuronal loss, synaptic reorganization, sclerosis of brain tissue, and certain motor and cognitive dysfunctions, including epilepsy and memory impairment. Cell replacement is a possible approach to treat excitotoxic neuronal injury. Following selective neuronal injury, targeted replacement of damaged neurons may be a logical choice.

How can mesenchymal stem cells-MSCs help?

It is thought that mesenchymal stem cell injection therapy may be more beneficial than traditional therapy, and implanted MSCs may be able to differentiate into nerve cells, horizontal cells and microglia. With the medical control system, the differentiated neurons can be transferred to neurons that can secrete an inhibitory neurotransmitter, regulating the function of neurons that paradoxically discharge. At the same time, some of the differentiated intermediate neurons can transfer the normal nerve impulse; initiating normal cell growth again. This method of treatment can improve the patient's spirit and intelligence, freeing him from the seizures. Eventually the disease can be stopped.

Treatment procedure:

It is known that human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (HUC-MSC) transplantation may be a promising therapeutic strategy for epilepsy. Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are used for cell therapies to repair motor neuron damage. Damaged nerves and nourishing neurons along with daily rehabilitation training to promote recovery of his motor function.

However, when discussing improvements, it is important to remember that improvements can vary greatly from patient to patient. Factors can be many, such as a patient's course of treatment, physical condition, severity, age, etc. Therefore, improvement cannot be guaranteed.
