Dr. Turul Demirel, one of the dozens of surgeons worldwide who have successfully practiced a unique surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, will consult patients for free in Sofia on May 14.
The top specialist from Medical Park Gaziosmanpasa Hospital (Turkey) will be a guest in our country at the invitation of "Medical Karaj" - the company that assists patients in solving their health problem at home or abroad.
Diabetes is one of the most common diagnoses these days. For Bulgaria, it is estimated that the number of diabetics exceeds 500 000, and about 90% of them have type 2 diabetes. In this form of the disease, the pancreas produces the hormone insulin, but it is either not enough to keep blood sugar in the normal range, or the cells in the body do not use it properly. Unfortunately, diabetes usually worsens over time, and long-term complications include cardiovascular problems, blindness, and neurological and kidney damage. Therefore, modern medicine is in search of alternative treatments to achieve complete remission and a permanent solution to the problem.
In recent years, several countries around the world - Brazil, Japan, India, America, Italy and Turkey - have begun to use a new surgical method to treat diabetes, with impressive results. It is called 'ileal interposition' and is a 'displacement' of the intestine which, in a much more powerful way than all drugs and insulin, removes the damage to the beta cells that underlie diabetes. The operation is laparoscopic and is performed through 6 small holes without an incision in the abdomen. The results so far are more than promising, says Dr. Demirel of Medical Park, who has successfully applied the method in Turkey. 85% of the patients are discharged from the hospital completely insulin independent. In 10% of them, drug treatment is reduced and stopped within a few months. In 5% of those operated on, insulin use is reduced and better blood glucose control is achieved.
This means that 95% of patients achieve remission and stop taking insulin. The revolutionary new method also successfully removes the co-morbidities of diabetes so that patients do not have to take cholesterol and high blood pressure medication.
The operation is suitable for patients with type 2 diabetes aged between 18 and 70 years who were diagnosed with the disease more than 2 years ago and who are unable to control their blood sugar levels well with standard treatment. It does not apply to people with type 1 diabetes and those who successfully control the disease with drug treatment.
Now patients from Bulgaria who are interested in the new method have the opportunity to have a free consultation with Dr. Turul Demirel in Sofia. For this purpose, they need to make an appointment in advance and provide the medical documentation they have so far.
Obese patients who are interested in surgical resolution of their problem can also benefit from free consultations. So-called bariatric surgery is recommended for patients with a body mass index over 35 who cannot lose weight with diet and exercise. Various methods are applied that are based on reducing the stomach volume or suppressing the absorption of nutrients. The decision as to whether surgery is appropriate for a particular patient and what method to use must necessarily be made by a highly qualified professional.
